Women’s Secretariat
The Government of Nunavut is working towards advancing gender and diversity issues through its Women’s Secretariat, which is part of the Department of EIA’s Social Advocacy Office. The Women’s Secretariat advises government decision-making to ensure that the unique needs and concerns of women are integrated into public policy, legislation, and programs. The Secretariat assists the Minister Responsible for the Status of Women and the Government of Nunavut in the promotion and protection of gender equality by developing and implementing frameworks to incorporate gender inclusive analysis in government policy making and program development processes.
Women’s Initiatives Grants Program
The Women’s Secretariat administers the Women’s Initiatives Grants Program, totaling $50,000 annually. This money supports community initiatives designed to protect and promote women’s wellbeing and to encourage the empowerment of women. Individuals, community groups, hamlets and organizations can apply for this funding.
Qulliit Status of Women Council
The Women’s Secretariat works closely with the Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council to improve the lives of women in Nunavut through research, education, public awareness and advocacy. The Council was established under the Status of Women Council Act of Nunavut on April 1, 1999 and commenced operations April 1, 2001. The purpose of the Council is to advance the goal of equal participation of women in society and promote changes in social, legal and economic structures to that end. Council members are women from across Nunavut who represent the interests and cultural and regional diversity of Nunavut.
