Energy Policy Division

The Energy Policy Division is responsible for the development, coordination and leadership of comprehensive energy policy to address Nunavut’s dependence on imported oil for heat, power and transportation. The Energy Policy Division monitors energy related issues and develops options and recommendations on Territorial energy policy and coordinates cross GN action on energy decisions. The Energy Policy Division is responsible for climate change mitigation policy development. It is also the intergovernmental lead on Federal-Territorial-Provincial energy and climate change policy discussions. The Energy Policy Division reports directly to the Minister of Energy and Deputy Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs.

The Energy Policy Division is also responsible for energy and climate change awareness work. The objective of this work is to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Nunavut. The work is aimed at increasing adoption of energy conservation practices, reduced energy waste, improved understanding of energy use, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and increased general awareness of energy consumption and conservation issues. The goal is to foster a “conservation ethic” among Nunavummiut that builds on traditional IQ principles and leads to measurable reductions in Nunavut’s energy consumption, energy costs, and Nunavut’s continued reliance on imported fossil fuels.
